A Lesson From the Escalator (Crazy = Rational)

I think the way we learn lessons in life is by taking time at the end of our day, letting it pass our minds one more time and looking for things that make us go:

“Hmm, that’s interesting.”

On Sunday, my friend Max and I went from Englischer Garten to his place. We picked up food along the way, and went to a party right after, so we traveled from A to B a lot, walking, taking the subway, and so on.

One of the stops we got out at had two escalators left and right and a staircase in the middle. It looked like this:

We were in a rush and so we decided to take the escalator and walk it up, to be faster. A lot of people got out, but even though both escalators went up, everyone queued to take the escalator on the right.

I said: “Max, they both go up, let’s take the other one.”

We took the one on the left. It was empty.

Looking back on it at the end of the day, I thought “hmm, that’s interesting.”

To the people on the right escalator, Max and I were the outsiders. The weirdos. The crazy ones.

Why are they taking the other escalator when everyone’s on here?

Often in life, what’s really rational seems crazy to most people. But it’s usually the rational people that win. So if you want to get somewhere in life, you have to be okay with looking crazy.

I guess in a way, you need to be crazy in order to be rational.

That’s the lesson I learned that day. I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn next Sunday.
