Bring the Energy You Want to See

“Your friend is back from maternity leave!” LinkedIn told me. I haven’t spoken to said friend in years, but I thought it was cool you can now put “Maternity Leave” on your résumé, even announce it on social media, and it’s a milestone people celebrate instead of a stigma we try to sweep under the rug.

Feeling the impulse to comment and join in on this noteworthy societal change, I found an old email my former boss had sent to both of us while we were working at the same company. It happened almost exactly ten years ago, and the message had a funny subject line: “Don’t forget your gym bag.” I pointed out both in my comment, suggesting his reminder may well still apply to returning from maternity leave, and then I went about my day.

Will my friend see my comment? I don’t know. Will she message me back if she does? No idea. But my gut tells me she’ll smile if she sees it, and that’s all I need. Knowing this spiritual crumb is now floating through the universe is good enough for me.

At least once a day, bring the energy you want to see. Do something that puts your unique karma signature out into the world. An action you can take without expectation. A message that’s not muddled by regrets from the past or worry about the future. Just a small act of honest self-expression that tips the cosmic scales with your singular presence on this planet.

It won’t get you a job or out of debt, but it’ll help you find joy in the moment, and in doing so, you’ll help all of us do the same. Be the spirit you want to visit you when you need it—because in order for a boomerang to come back, first, you have to throw it.
