My Uncle Died in His Sleep, and It Changed Me Forever

On January 21st, 2016, my uncle Martin did something that changed me forever. At 7 AM, he woke up, walked to the bathroom, went to the toilet and then back to sleep.

He never woke up again. At 52 years old, he died peacefully in his sleep. No pain, no heart problems detected. He had lost 60 lbs the year before and was in better shape than ever.

Seneca said that “life is long, if you know how to use it.” But sometimes life truly is short. Not everyone gets the time they may deserve.

Since I didn’t know how to deal with his death, I did what I always do to process things: I wrote.

In math, minus and minus equals plus.

Life doesn’t work that way. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Karma is a flywheel. I truly believe that. You push it in one direction and off it goes.

For the past 26 years, I’ve had nothing but love, support and encouragement from my parents. More than most people get in a lifetime. There’s not a thing more I could possibly ask for.

Maybe he’s had really abusive parents.

Maybe he’s lost them really young.

Maybe he’s had no parents at all.

Whatever caused him to do this, I really feel sorry for the guy.

All their life, my parents have done nothing but push the flywheel in the right direction. The least I can do to honor them is the same.

He’s going to get his. I’ve long had mine. So no, I’m not pushing him off the building.

The One Thing Money Cannot Buy
