Do Millennials Prefer Debit Cards to Credit Cards?

Millennial here, offering a data set with a sample size of one. Let’s see the compelling evidence!

This is my debit card:

As the name indicates, this card debits my account every time I make a purchase with it, subtracting the price from my balance.

Using this card means:

  • I’m spending money I have earned.
  • I’ve successfully completed my contractual obligation to pay whoever created the service or product I’ve purchased.
  • I never have to worry about this purchase again, except to include it in my budget report at the end of the month.

This is my credit card:

As the name indicates, this card credits my account every time I make a purchase with it, recording the price on a separate account, so my balance isn’t affected.

Using this card means:

  • I’m spending money I haven’t earned. I’m getting an advance which I will have to pay back later.
  • I now owe money to the bank, which stepped in to fulfill my contractual obligation to pay whoever created the service or product I’ve purchased for me.
  • I have to worry about this purchase all month, because at the 21st, the bank wants their money back, so I better have it by then.

One card represents honesty, hard work, integrity, freedom and living up to your promises. The other represents indulgence, excess, excuses, anxiety and being encumbered with debts.

So unlike the matrix, I try to choose blue over red as often as possible. You don’t need a government study to see why that makes sense. It’s just good business.
