Do you ever tell someone about all the different things you’ve got going on, and then they say, “Wow!” and you say, “Yeah, it’s a lot…”? And in those moments, do you ever think to yourself, “Maybe everything I’m doing, maybe it’s…too much?”
That’s what “It’s a lot” is code for, I think. It means in all your endeavors, from doing well at work to being a good friend to maintaining a clean household, there are at least a handful you’re no longer sure of. “It’s a lot” — but is the entire lot worth keeping up? Because what we should be saying is, “Oh yeah, it’s easy.”
On Mother’s Day, I thanked my mom for the thousands of times she cooked for us, drove us to sports, the cinema, or piano lessons, and nursed us back to health when we had yet another middle ear infection. She said: “Actually, if you have the best children in the world, it’s all very easy. Always a pleasure.”
That’s what life should feel like. Easy — not because you get to lounge around all day but because you’ve made peace with your choices and believe fiercely in what you are doing, sacrifice and all.
Watch out for “It’s a lot.” If you catch yourself saying it too much, perhaps it’s time to reflect and rearrange a few parts of your life puzzle. Keep finding your way back to “It’s easy.” Maybe one day, even your children will thank you for it.
