Leave the Bug Alone

While I was writing another post, a big bug flew into my living room. It was the nasty kind.

I wanted to jump off the couch and chase it down immediately. Then, it disappeared from view. I kept writing.

Halfway through the post, another itch. I turn around and see the bug sneakily rubbing its hands inside my curtains. Oh it’s just waiting to surprise me. Again, I wanted to get up and deal with it right then and there. Again, I decided not to.

I have now finished writing that post. I don’t know where the bug is. It bothers me. In a moment, I shall go look for it. But not now. Right now, there’s another post to finish.

Sitting still on your couch while a blood-sucking insect is circling you is uncomfortable—uncomfortable but possible. Ignoring interruptions is often the right choice, and even when it’s not, it’s usually good training.

Leave the bug alone. You’ve got bigger fish to fry, and by the time you’re eating, it’ll probably have flown out the window all on its own.
