Only humans can. Starting with you. First, you’ll have to pick yourself. You’ll have to start writing, or filming, or doing the work you want to be officially approved to do later. Once you pick yourself, you’re already ahead.
No sooner have you done so, however, as the next distraction awaits: In a world where the platforms you showcase your art on are run by algorithms, it’s easy to then yell at the machines. “Pick me, pick me!” But the algorithmic spotlight is as fickle as the robot arm in a claw machine: It may single you out, or it may not, but it doesn’t care at all. You’re a stuffed animal praying to a god made of metal—and life is too short and precious for that.
When you make art for humans, sooner or later, the right people will find you. Ironically, the robots may just help you along the way. But the real trick is not needing them to begin with. There’s a great pizza place one town over from my village. Its reputation has reached me just fine without Google Maps. Ahh, the bliss of requiring only a handful of recommendations from friends to succeed.
Even if the scale of your venture is larger, the friends scattered around the globe, don’t pitch yourself to algorithms. Make art for people, lift others as you climb, and let the picking take care of itself.
