Until the day of my civil wedding, I never wore a piece of jewelry in my life. When we tried and picked out our rings, I wasn’t sure how I would adjust to wearing one every day. “I’m not a ring person,” I said.
Then, the wedding happened, we exchanged our rings, and I left it on for the next 48 hours straight. It actually felt weird to take it off ahead of the free ceremony at our own event.
I still wouldn’t consider myself a ring person. It’s not like I’m gonna start wearing all kinds of glitz and glam. But I also always knew that, like my mom and dad, I’d probably never take off my wedding ring once I put it on.
After our ceremony, I noticed one of my wife’s friends not wearing her ring. Neither did her husband. “It’s just a symbol, you know?” she said. And she’s right.
I guess, for some reason, this one matters to me when most others don’t. Or, maybe, I’m just trying to be like my parents. They’ve been married for 36 years, so it surely wasn’t bad luck to keep their rings on.
Life offers us countless reminders that there are no rules and it’s never too late to reinvent ourselves. Always leave some space for the moment that might change you forever.
