I Found Something Beautiful Amidst a Torrent of Terrible News

In The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin says it takes about 5 positive experiences in our lives to compensate one negative one. If that’s even remotely true, then the whole media system really is crooked beyond belief.

Can’t we have a news app that serves us with that golden ratio of positive to negative news? That way, I wouldn’t have to wade through a sea of sh*t each time, digging for the gold.

While you get on that, I’ll keep wading — pun intended. This week, I found something beautiful in the mud.

Waiting for Miracles Is No Good Way To Live

One stormy evening, as the rain pours from the sky, a man notices a river of water flowing down the street from his kitchen window.

He rushes into his basement, only to realize it’s already filled with two feet of water.

“Oh no god, why me?” he mumbles to himself. “Ah, it’ll be alright. I’ve always been a faithful believer. He’ll save me.”

What Is a Fun Psychological Trick To Try on Someone?

Look people in the eye when you pass them in the street.

I read about this fun little game in The 4-Hour Workweek as an exercise to build confidence.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Establish eye contact with people as you’re about to cross paths.
  2. Hold it as long as you can.

This achieves two things:

  • You’ll look more confident to others. “Whoa! I’m getting noticed! Why does he/she look at me? What black magic is this?”
  • You’ll become more confident the longer you play, for one simple reason: 99.9% of people will look away first.

I sometimes play this for 10, 15 minutes at a time and not a single person “wins” a round against me – by the time we pass by they look away. It’s a great way to make you feel really good about yourself, really fast.

Trust me, this is hilarious. Especially when you look at people like this:

PS: This depends a lot on the country and city you’re in, but don’t play it where it might get you into trouble.

What Is the Meaning of Your Name?

My name is Niklas and like me today, it comes with a story.

One of the most popular Niklas’s on the globe is Niklas Zennström, the billionaire founder of Skype. Zennström is Swedish and lo and behold, Niklas is one of the most popular male names there. During the 80s, it was even in the top 10.

The name was first recorded as a given name there in 1593, and given it’s very popular in Finland and the other Scandinavian countries as well, you might think that’s where it originated from.

Nope. Sorry, no credit for the guys with the Northern lights. Let’s move a bit further south and land in…

12 Amazing Miracles You Carry In Your Pocket Like It’s No Big Deal

“No matter how I twist and turn it, the math is still depressing.”

Even watching the lectures at double speed, getting through 24 lectures of 90 minutes each takes 18 hours. And that’s just my economics class. No notes taken. I have five more, plus a 10-page scientific paper to write this semester, if I want to turn my master plan into reality.

But that’s not the depressing part. Read More

Stop Blaming Science for Your Lack of Productivity

From 1896 to 1899, over 100,000 people sold their belongings, closed up shop and headed to Dawson City. Located in the Yukon in Canada, the hub of the Klondike Gold Rush resembled big dreams and hopes high as the sky.

And you thought queuing for Star Wars was tough.

Of the 30,000 that eventually became habituated in Dawson City, only a handful became rich. Average spend per person to reach the region was $1,000 ($27,000 today), which far exceeded the total gold produce by the time the rush ended.

Most of these people left with their pockets as empty as they were when they got there.

Right now, the same thing is happening again. Only this time, the Klondike is not in Canada and the gold is not buried beneath rocks and sand.

The nuggets we chase are the insights of science and they’re supposed to make us abundant in productivity.

Welcome to the 21st century gold rush of the mind.

If You Had One Wish Granted, What Would You Ask For?

Three weeks ago to this day I went to a friend’s birthday party after work. It was a Tuesday.

Just a few days before, me and my roommate had agreed that having an in-bed-by-12-AM-rule during the week would be smart. I always get up at 6 AM, my sleep wouldn’t become too liquid.

Well…

Would be.

11:30 came and went and I was still at the party.

My roommate started joking: “Looks like the 12 AM just went out the window, didn’t it?”

I joked back: “That may be true, but the 6 AM part still stands.”

(͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Thomas and Jules started too: “Looks like you’ll be at school a bit later than usual tomorrow, huh?”

Me: “Just watch me.”
