Peace Is Strength

The lightsaber duel between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace is one of the most iconic fight scenes in the Star Wars universe and perhaps TV history in general. It is fast-paced, well-choreographed, and brought an entirely new dynamic to how lightsaber battles appear on the big screen.

Ironically, the moment I most keep coming back to is the one in which nothing at all seems to happen. The fight happens across multiple locations. First, the two Jedi fight the evil Darth Maul in a hangar. Then, they transition through a maintenance area until, eventually, reaching the planet’s core energy source, a plasma reactor.

Since it’s not exactly a publicly accessible space, the last room is protected by a row of impenetrable laser walls, turning on and off in short intervals. As a result, the Jedi get separated while chasing after Maul. For a minute or so, all three fighters are stuck behind these red laser walls, and no one can do anything. What would you do with a sudden one-minute break in a fight to the death?

Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Padawan pupil of Master Qui-Gon Jinn, must stop in front of the very first wall. Far off from the fight, he stands at the ready mere inches from the deadly wall, lightsaber activated, ready to sprint forward. Eventually, he briefly turns off his weapon but reactivates it before the walls open up again. He is focused but impatient. Eager to reconnect with his teacher and take down their opponent.

Darth Maul, meanwhile, has almost made it to the reactor room. The first thing he does after the walls go up? Test them with his dual lightsaber, of course. Are they actually impregnable? After he confirms they are, he restlessly paces up and down, staring at his enemy in contempt. You can feel his hatred through the screen. He is aggressive, greedy, and even more impatient than Obi-Wan.

Meanwhile, two feet in front of him kneels Qui-Gon Jinn. Jinn turned off his lightsaber as soon as the wall between them went up. He immediately transitioned into a resting position. And now? After taking a few deep breaths, he’s meditating. Meditating! With closed eyes, Qui-Gon keeps breathing. He is recharging. Listening. Syncing with his environment, the Force, and the situation. That’s why, despite being in such a vulnerable position, Qui-Gon has no problems re-entering the fight the second the laser wall buzzes and disappears. In one fluid motion, his eyes open, his lightsaber activates, and he lunges at his enemy, continuing the battle with the exact same intensity from which he left it mere seconds earlier.

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you know how this battle ends. If not, the movie is worth watching just to find out. But after my latest rewatch, that scene kept popping into my head.

The poise. The equanimity. This is what all Jedi train for, and yet, few attain true mastery over their attention, thoughts, and emotions. Only a man free of judgments could switch so seamlessly from duel to recovery and back. In a life-or-death situation, Qui-Gon Jinn showed no bias towards his enemy at all. Only a clear concern for the situation he was living through right in that moment. That’s peace—and that’s strength.

Life is one experience after another. If we’re always thinking about the one coming up, are we ever really here?

Your focus determines your reality.” — Qui-Gon Jinn
