She Already Knew

“One chocopresso, please” the guy went. “Oh, what’s that?” I thought. I was queuing at the bakery in my local grocery store and about to learn a lesson.

To me, the name “chocopresso” indicated the drink would be an espresso with some kind of chocolate infusion. Imagine my surprise when I saw the lady behind the counter hand over a big cappuccino in a to-go cup. “Ha, so it’s more of a chococcino!” I realized—and promptly ordered one for myself.

It was great. A proper coffee drink with a hint of chocolate. The place even has a full-on “pimp my coffee” station decked out with lids, napkins, cinnamon, cocoa powder, and so on. Chocolate overload, here I come!

Needless to say, that wasn’t my last chocopresso. I’ve probably ordered four or five of them over the span of the last two weeks. And guess what? Yesterday, as soon as I showed up at the counter, the sales lady already knew. “Chocopresso?” “Chocopresso!” I was shocked how quickly she picked up on it.

It slips our mind as we age and plug into our routines, but: Humans learn fast. We don’t lose this ability. We can realize we were wrong about what a certain word meant. We can discover new drinks we enjoy. And we can remember new faces and their favorite order in a matter of days.

Never give up on learning, and it won’t ever give up on you either.
