I want to live a life of freedom. Unrestricted, unlimited, infinitely liberating freedom.
When I imagine my perfect life, I have a vision of a small house on top of a hill, that overlooks a vast sea of green. Meadows as far as the eye can see. Something like this:
Or this:
What this house, this independent little fortress of wonder, resembles, is freedom.
I want to do whatever I do in life from a position of freedom.
- The freedom to choose what I work on.
- The freedom to set my own rules of how I work.
- The freedom to say no to what I don’t want.
- The freedom to walk out on toxic people.
- The freedom to never compromise my values for money.
This comes down to self-awareness. For as long as I can remember, my drive to do great work, deliver the best I can and go above and beyond what is expected of me has always been highest when I chose what I wanted to work on.
For example, I was always good in school, but I only ever did what I needed to get by. But when I practiced my soccer tricks…
…built my Yu-Gi-Oh! card deck…
…or played my video games…
…I became obsessed. In the best sense of the word. Obsessed.
Now that I have finally found something that’s not just fun, but can be a source of good for other people – writing – I feel like I can pull off something really great if I let that obsession run its natural course.
And the best position for me to do that from is freedom.
The way for me to reach that position is to
- Build multiple income streams until I can support myself and a family.
- Save and invest a good chunk of that income by living below my means.
- Make a milli or two by age 40.
- Rent that house on the hill and enjoy that freedom.
The truth is, I have a ton of things I want to do in this life. Maybe I can become a zen-like martial arts teacher. Maybe I’ll be a superstar electronic dance music producer. Maybe, I’ll give the world its first, properly working jetpack.
All I know is, whenever I choose from freedom, I’m committed 150% to what I choose. And that’s the only way to change the world.
