What Are Random Things That Make You Happy?

“Enjoy the little things in life because one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” ― Kurt Vonnegut

Here are a few of my big things:

  • The moment I lie down in my bed after a really long, hard day of work. When I pull up that blanket, that’s bliss. It’s not the same on days when I just goofed off.
  • Entering huge buildings. When I look up in a big entrance hall, I feel small. I like that.
  • The smell that comes out of my coffee cup before the first sip. I’m one of those people who drink it for the taste more so than for the caffeine. Weird, I know.
  • The short break after a song before the next one comes on. I’m like a monkey when it comes to bananas: no matter which one you give me, I can’t get enough.
  • Remnants of creative minds, dead or alive. I have a framed set of five sketches by Da Vinci on my wall, including the Vitruvian Man. Best IKEA buy ever.
  • Every piece of food someone hands me I didn’t have to make. It’s a huge luxury to be able to afford outsourcing such a vital part of life so I can focus on what I do best.
  • Shower thoughts. Whenever my subconscious kicks good ideas back to the top of my mind under running water, I do a little fist pump.
  • Taking out my contact lenses. After pushing their limits for probably too long yet again, lid relaxation is bliss.
  • Passing by a stretch of freshly cut grass. The smell is intoxicating. Extra points for recent rain.
  • Seeing the sun after walking up the stairs leaving the subway. It’s the city equivalent of the reward you get for climbing a hill in the wild.

As I’m starting to make a little more money, it’s nice to see some things don’t change.

I hope these never will.
