What Was Life Like in 2000?

Oh man. The best year of my life. Easily. I was in 3rd grade. 9 years old. I’m sure I did a ton of awesome stuff, but I really remember just one thing:

Pokémon Red & Blue had been released in Europe just a few months before and the mania was insane. We spent every waking minute either playing Pokémon or learning how to get better at playing Pokémon.

Tuesday’s was Pokémon card game league at the local toy store.

Wednesday was game guide reading night.

Recess was trading and battling time.

Our school yard became a bazaar. Behind the playground there was a little, secret trail hidden in the trees. Whenever we had an urgent fight or evolution issue to deal with, we’d sneak a few extra break minutes there.

We hacked the shit out of the game too. I remember one day I was almost late to class because a friend helped me catch Mew with his XPloder cheat module.

Gotta catch ’em all!

Only when the school completely ruled out the game in any form were we finally able to take our class photo:

That was 17 years ago. I’m 26 now. How has everything changed in such a long time?

Well, first of all, the graphics look a lot better.

The school yard’s a bit bigger too.

But other than that, I can’t think of anything. Oh, except I chose blue this time.

I guess life hasn’t changed all that much. 🙂
