Why Is It Harder To Wake Up in the Winter?

It’s that time of the year again. On the first day you wake up and feel that pulling away your blanket will really, really suck, you know winter is coming.

For me, yesterday was that day. Today was even worse. I lay in bed for almost 2 hours after waking up. I wasn’t catching up on sleep. Or reading. Nope. I was wasting time, thinking about how much time I’m wasting, because I could not get myself to pull away that blanket.

God I hate winter.

When my dad was in the German army, they all had only two sets of clothes: a winter outfit and a summer outfit. Come March 21st, the calendric start of spring, he had to wear the summer outfit. No matter if it was snowing outside.

That’s nonsense. Seasons are subjective.

We all have an inner thermostat and each one is wired differently. But sooner or later, we all reach a point where it realizes keeping up your body temperature will take a whole lot more effort from now on. Your body wants to conserve energy and so suddenly, leaving your bed gets ugly.

A few things that help in rather literally dark times:

  • Strong coffee.
  • Hot showers.
  • Work you look forward to.

Look out for the day when pulling away your blanket will suck. Winter is coming.
